Lhadar was great & Vincent was amazing. Vincent's attitude was awesome & he went above and beyond to see our comfort as well as make our trip unforgettable. Lhadar was so good at explaining everything we saw & he answered all the questions we had along the way. This trip was really fantastic & I can't imagine another company doing it as well. I also appreciated all the small comforts along the way like masks, snacks, neck pillow, toilet liners, toilet paper, etc. It showed attention to detail that we would not have anticipated.
We had a spectacular trip. It was a trip of a lifetime. Got to see Everest too (the clouds opened up just for us). Everything went really well. We even handled the altitude with no issues. As usual, Super Value Tours did an amazing job (great guides, hotels, food, service, and itinerary). Thank you for all of your help to make this trip happen for us!
Tutu, our tour manager for the Tibet Tour was exceptional. She was smart, efficient, organized, energetic but also warm and caring, cheerful, and unfailingly helpful... She is quite a special person!
Tibet rewards a little preparation. From adjusting to the altitude to understanding local customs, these helpful notes will help you arrive informed, comfortable, and ready to enjoy the journey.
Tibet's high elevation affects every traveler differently. Our tour will cover altitudes over 8,000 ft above sea level and we will reach 17,000ft at the highest point. As your body adjusts to the lower oxygen levels, you may experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, reduced appetite, or trouble sleeping. Our itinerary is thoughtfully paced to give your body time to acclimatize, particularly during the first days of the journey.
If you are pregnant or have a heart, lung, blood, sleep-related, or other significant medical condition, please speak with your physician about high-altitude travel before booking. Guests interested in preventive medication for altitude illness should also consult their physician before departure.
Keep activity light during your first couple of days at altitude. Move at a comfortable pace, allow yourself extra time to rest, and avoid strenuous exercise while your body adjusts.
Drink normally to stay well hydrated and eat regular, nourishing meals. Avoid alcohol during your first 48 hours at altitude, as it may make acclimatization more difficult.
Please tell your Tour Director if you develop altitude-related symptoms, especially if they worsen. Travelers experiencing symptoms should not continue to a higher sleeping elevation until they have improved.
Tibetan traditions are deeply woven into everyday life. A few simple gestures of awareness go a long way and help us visit temples, monasteries, and local communities with care and respect. When customs vary by site, your Tour Director and local guide will help show the way.
At Tibetan Buddhist temples, monasteries, stupas, and prayer wheels, the customary direction of movement is clockwise. Follow our guides and local practices when visiting.
Rather than pointing with one finger, gesture with an open hand. Avoid pointing directly toward religious images, sacred mountains, or shrines.
Lakes, mountains, prayer flags, and other religious objects can hold deep spiritual meaning. Please avoid disturbing sacred objects or entering waters considered sacred, and follow your guide's instructions at each site.
Dress respectfully with shoulders and knees covered. Remove hats where requested, keep voices low, and follow posted photography restrictions. Always ask before photographing monks or local residents.
You may encounter greetings and gestures unfamiliar to visitors. Follow your guide's lead and respond warmly and respectfully. If offered a ceremonial khata, or white scarf, receive it with both hands and a slight bow.
Some religious areas, including sky burial sites, are deeply sacred and are not part of our visits. Please do not approach, enter, or photograph restricted areas.
A few practical details can make travel in Tibet much more comfortable. Here's what we recommend keeping in mind as you prepare.
Conditions can vary considerably by elevation, and temperatures often change between daytime and evening. Pack versatile layers, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat with good sun protection. Bring a warm all-weather or down jacket for the higher-elevation portions of the journey, including our North Everest Base Camp excursion.
Supera selects comfortable, quality accommodations with private bathrooms and hot water. As we travel into more remote high-altitude regions, facilities and service levels may be simpler than those found in major cities. That's part of traveling through one of the world's most extraordinary and remote landscapes.
Mobile payment is widely used throughout China. Before departure, we recommend setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay and linking an eligible international bank card. These apps can be especially useful for small everyday purchases.
We also recommend carrying a modest amount of RMB as backup. International bank cards are accepted at many larger businesses and hotels, but acceptance may be more limited at smaller merchants and in remote areas.
Along the way, you'll have opportunities to encounter distinctly Tibetan flavors, from butter tea and Tibetan sweet tea to handmade noodles and roasted barley. Local teahouses also offer a wonderful glimpse into the rhythms of everyday life.
Gyantse carpets, thangka paintings, and turquoise jewelry are among Tibet's most distinctive keepsakes. We recommend avoiding medicinal or herbal products when their authenticity or ingredients are difficult to verify.
A practical note: We recommend not purchasing or carrying knives, pocket knives, or multitools during the journey. Security restrictions on Chinese flights and trains vary by item, and carrying these objects can lead to delays or confiscation at security checkpoints.
